About Black Warrant
Black Warrant is a 2025 Indian Hindi-language prison drama created by Vikramaditya Motwane, who developed and directed the series for Netflix alongside co-creator Satyanshu Singh. Set largely in the 1980s, it follows Sunil Gupta, an idealistic and soft-spoken young law graduate who takes up a post as a jailer inside Delhi's notorious Tihar Jail. The series is adapted from the memoir Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer, written by the real Sunil Gupta with journalist Sunetra Choudhury.
Across its seven episodes, the show traces Sunil's early years on the job as he learns how the prison actually runs from the inside. He works under a gruff superior officer and alongside a small group of fellow recruits, encountering hardened inmates, entrenched routines, and the day-to-day machinery of incarceration. The title refers to the death-warrant procedure, and the series treats capital punishment and the violence of prison life in serious, restrained terms rather than as spectacle.
Critics widely praised Black Warrant as a measured, period-accurate institutional drama anchored by Zahan Kapoor's understated lead performance and Rahul Bhat as the seasoned jail superintendent. Rather than sensationalize, the series stays focused on procedure, hierarchy, and the moral cost of a system that grinds against one young officer's conscience. It was released on Netflix on January 10, 2025, and a second season was subsequently reported to be in development.
