About Civilization
Civilization (Civilizacija) is a Serbian dramedy set in present-day Belgrade that follows the entangled lives of a group of urban professionals, artists, and hustlers trying to keep their footing in a city where old loyalties and new money are constantly at odds. The series uses a single extended social circle as a lens on contemporary Serbian life, moving between glossy apartments, theater foyers, television studios, and late-night bars where reputations are made and quietly destroyed.
At the center are a married couple whose careers pull them in opposite directions, a sharp-tongued cultural journalist chasing a story that could implicate friends, and a returning emigre who finds the city both familiar and unrecognizable. Their overlapping ambitions, affairs, and compromises drive a narrative that treats personal choices as small mirrors of larger social pressures, from media spin to the soft corruption of favors traded among people who all know one another.
Across its seasons the show widens from a domestic portrait into an ensemble study of what it means to behave decently when everyone around you is improvising the rules. It balances biting humor with genuine tenderness, letting characters bend, break, and occasionally surprise themselves, and it became one of the more talked-about recent Serbian-language streaming dramas for its willingness to satirize the very class it portrays.
