About Cristal (Venezuela)
Cristal is a Venezuelan telenovela produced by Radio Caracas Television and first broadcast in 1985. Written by the Cuban-born author Delia Fiallo, a defining figure of the romantic telenovela form, it became one of the most widely exported Latin American productions of its decade and is frequently cited as a milestone in the international spread of the genre. The serial runs as a single continuous story told across more than two hundred half-hour episodes.
The plot opens with a thwarted romance between a young woman of modest means and a man training for the priesthood, a separation whose consequences echo across the years. More than two decades later the focus shifts to Cristina Exposito, a girl raised in an orphanage who finds work at a leading fashion house run by Victoria Ascanio. Adopting the professional name Cristal, she rises to prominence as a celebrated model while becoming entangled with Victoria's stepson, Luis Alfredo Sanchez.
Built around hidden parentage, social class, and the slow revelation of a long-buried secret, Cristal follows the conventions of the classic melodrama while pairing them with a glossy fashion-world setting. The series turned its leads into household names across Spanish-speaking markets and beyond, and remains a touchstone for fans and scholars studying the golden era of Venezuelan television drama.
