About Deutschland 83

In the summer of 1983, with NATO and the Warsaw Pact locked in nuclear brinkmanship, a 24-year-old East German border guard named Martin Rauch is pulled out of his ordinary life and pressed into service for the Stasi. His aunt Lenora, a committed foreign-intelligence officer, recruits him under duress and ships him across the divided Germany to the West, where he assumes a dead lieutenant's identity and becomes an aide to a West German Bundeswehr general.

Code-named Kolibri, Martin must learn the craft of espionage on the fly: copying documents, working a tiny camera, decoding orders and improvising when the cover begins to fray. The intelligence he gathers feeds an Eastern leadership convinced that the West may be preparing a first strike, and the season builds toward the very real 1983 war scare around the Able Archer exercise.

Soaked in 1980s pop, fashion and Cold War paranoia, Deutschland 83 balances propulsive spy mechanics with the human cost of a country split in two. Martin is torn between the family and fiancee he left in the East and the people he is deceiving in the West, while his handlers weigh ideology against the lives caught in the middle. The series was a breakout hit abroad and spawned the sequels Deutschland 86 and Deutschland 89.
