About Das Boot
Das Boot is a German-language period drama and a sequel to Wolfgang Petersen's classic 1981 film, drawing on Lothar-Guenther Buchheim's source material. Set in late 1942 in the occupied French port of La Rochelle, it follows the young and untested crew of the submarine U-612 as they set out under the command of Kapitaenleutnant Klaus Hoffmann, the son of a celebrated U-boat captain who must prove himself far from shore.
On land, the story widens into a tense web of occupied-port intrigue. Marinehelferin Simone Strasser, a German translator working for the naval command, is drawn into the orbit of the French Resistance, while Kriminalrat Hagen Forster pursues threats to the occupation with cold determination. The series moves between the cramped, claustrophobic interior of the boat and the watched streets of the town, where loyalty is provisional and survival depends on whom you trust.
Across four seasons the canvas expands beyond La Rochelle to neutral Portugal, the German home front at Kiel, the wider Atlantic, and the Italian campaign, following intertwined characters whose convictions are tested as the war turns. Acclaimed for its lavish production, moral complexity, and the unbearable tension of life beneath the surface, Das Boot reframes a celebrated story for a new era while keeping its focus on the human cost of war.
