About Drops of God
Drops of God, known in French as Les Gouttes de Dieu, is a 2023 French-Japanese drama created by Quoc Dang Tran for Apple TV plus and loosely adapted from the acclaimed Japanese manga by Tadashi Agi and Shu Okimoto. Shot across France, Japan, and Italy and performed in French, Japanese, and English, the eight-episode limited series turns the rarefied world of fine wine into the setting for a story about grief, inheritance, and the limits of expertise. At its center is the death of Alexandre Leger, a legendary and exacting wine critic whose palate was considered the finest in the world.
When Alexandre dies, his will reveals an extraordinary condition. His estranged French daughter, Camille Leger, played by Fleur Geffrier, must compete for the largest and most valuable private wine collection ever assembled against Issei Tomine, played by Tomohisa Yamashita, the gifted Japanese oenologist Alexandre took on as a protege and treated almost as a son. To inherit, the two strangers must face a series of blind-tasting challenges that probe not only their senses but the memories, wounds, and family history bound up in every glass.
Across its eight episodes, the series frames the contest as a journey of the senses and of reconciliation. Camille, who has avoided wine her whole life, discovers a buried talent and a complicated relationship with the father she barely knew, while Issei wrestles with his own family's expectations and his loyalty to the mentor who shaped him. Praised for its elegant photography and its sincere, character-driven approach, Drops of God keeps its focus on the tasting room and the human story rather than melodrama, building toward a quiet reckoning with what we inherit and what we choose to become.
