About Anthracite
Anthracite is a 2024 French mystery thriller created by Fanny Robert and Maxime Berthemy for Netflix, with all six episodes directed by Julius Berg. Set in a remote town in the French Alps, the limited series braids together two timelines separated by three decades, using the cold, mineral landscape of the mountains as a backdrop for a slow-burning investigation. The story begins when a journalist looking into the buried history of a reclusive 1990s community vanishes without a trace, setting a fresh inquiry in motion.
When her reporter father disappears, online sleuth Ida Heilman, played by Noemie Schmidt, travels to the valley to retrace his last known steps. There she crosses paths with Jaro Gatsi, played by Hatik, a local man with a complicated past who becomes entangled in the case, and Giovanna DeLuca, played by Camille Lou, an investigator working the same disappearances. As the trio compares notes, they realize the present-day mystery is rooted in the long-dormant legacy of a secretive alpine sect.
Across its six episodes, Anthracite balances procedural detective work with a moody, atmospheric portrait of a community that has spent years keeping its secrets. The series weaves true-crime forum culture, family loss, and small-town silence into a single thread, treating the darker history of the sect and the surrounding violence in suggestive rather than explicit terms. The result is a contained alpine thriller centered on its investigators and the question of what the town has chosen to forget.
