About Dahaad
Dahaad is an Indian Hindi-language crime procedural that premiered on Amazon Prime Video in 2023. Created by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar and directed by Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi, the eight-episode series is set in the fictional small town of Mandawa in Rajasthan. It follows Sub-Inspector Anjali Bhaati, a tenacious and methodical police officer from a marginalized lower-caste background, who begins to notice a troubling pattern hidden inside a backlog of routine missing-persons reports. As she connects cases that the system had quietly filed away and forgotten, she uncovers evidence pointing to a single predator who has been targeting vulnerable women across the region for years.
The series is structured as a steady, evidence-driven investigation rather than a sensational thriller. Working alongside the empathetic senior officer Devilal Singh and fellow Sub-Inspector Kailash Parghi, Bhaati pieces the disappearances together through case files, witness interviews, and patient forensic work. Crucially, Dahaad treats the crimes themselves in restrained, clinical terms, keeping its focus on the human cost to the missing women and their families and on the institutional indifference that allowed the pattern to go unexamined. The investigation becomes as much about who society chooses to look for as it is about catching a culprit.
Beneath the procedural framework, Dahaad is a pointed study of caste and gender bias in contemporary India. Bhaati faces condescension and obstruction not only because she is a woman in a male-dominated force but because of her caste, and the series draws a direct line between social prejudice and the invisibility of the victims, many of whom came from families that lacked the standing to demand a serious police response. Praised by critics for its writing, atmosphere, and Sonakshi Sinha's grounded lead performance in her streaming debut, the show was widely cited as one of the strongest Indian crime dramas of its year and was selected to screen at the Berlin International Film Festival.
