About El Encargado
El Encargado (The Boss, also released as The Manager) is an Argentine dark comedy created by Mariano Cohn and Gaston Duprat, the filmmaking duo behind acclaimed satires of status and ego. Premiering on Star+ in Latin America in 2022 and later carried on Disney+ and Hulu, it became one of the platform's biggest local hits. Guillermo Francella stars as Eliseo, the smiling, ever-helpful superintendent of an upscale apartment building in Buenos Aires who quietly runs the place as his own private kingdom.
Behind the warm greetings and folksy charm, Eliseo is a patient, calculating operator. He reads the residents' weaknesses, trades in their secrets, and steers the building's politics so that nothing happens without his blessing. When owners and the consortium scheme to modernize the building or push him out, he answers with a velvet-gloved campaign of manipulation, surveillance, and well-timed favors, always keeping his hands clean while rivals undo themselves.
The series turns the building into a microcosm of Argentine society, where class anxiety, vanity, and small cruelties play out floor by floor. As Eliseo spars with his lawyer neighbor and nemesis Matias Zambrano and leans on his loyal young assistant Miguel, the comedy stays restrained and observational, letting the menace simmer under polite surfaces. The result is a sharp, character-driven study of power that doubles as a showcase for Francella's gift for genial menace.
