About Everything Calls for Salvation
Everything Calls for Salvation (Tutto chiede salvezza) is an Italian coming-of-age drama that premiered on Netflix in 2022, adapted from the award-winning autobiographical novel by Daniele Mencarelli. The story follows Daniele, a sensitive young man who wakes up in a psychiatric ward to learn he has been placed under a one-week compulsory hold. Frightened and disoriented at first, he gradually comes to see the seven days ahead not as a sentence but as an unexpected pause in which to take stock of his life.
Sharing a single room with five very different men, Daniele slowly lowers his guard. Across long afternoons and quiet nights, the roommates trade jokes, fears, and small confidences, and a fragile camaraderie takes root. The series treats each character with dignity and tenderness, finding humor and grace in their company rather than spectacle in their struggles. What could have been a week of isolation becomes, instead, a week of being truly seen.
Directed by Francesco Bruni and led by Federico Cesari in a warmly acclaimed performance, the show was widely praised for its compassion, its humanity, and its hopeful view of recovery and connection. A second season, released in 2024, follows Daniele beyond the ward as the friendships forged there continue to shape him. Above all, Everything Calls for Salvation is a story about empathy: about how being held, listened to, and accompanied by others can be its own kind of salvation.
