About Girls Band Cry
Girls Band Cry is an original anime produced by Toei Animation that follows Nina Iseri, a high school dropout who leaves her hometown for Tokyo determined to prove she can stand on her own and live life her own way. Adrift in the city, she is pulled back toward music after a chance encounter with a former pro guitarist, and the show charts how a handful of frustrated, fiercely individual young women form a band and try to be heard.
The series centers on the band Togenashi Togeari, whose members each carry their own grievances with the adult world and with the music industry that has already chewed some of them up. Rather than a tidy underdog story, the show leans into raw emotion, prickly personalities, and the friction of five strong-willed people learning to make something together, with the highs of a great live set set against the disappointments and compromises of chasing a dream.
Directed by Kazuo Sakai with series composition by Jukki Hanada, the anime is notable for blending 3DCG character animation with hand-drawn sensibilities and for its real-world musical project: the in-universe band's songs are performed by the same young performers who voice the characters. It aired in Japan from April to June 2024 and streams internationally on Crunchyroll, earning a devoted fanbase for its honest, sometimes abrasive portrait of youth and ambition.
