About Gold Leaf

Set in 1950s Hsinchu, Gold Leaf follows Chang Yi-hsin, the only daughter of a prominent Hakka tea-trading dynasty whose family business once made Taiwan a force in the global tea market. When the postwar economy and a sudden reversal of fortune threaten the company, the responsibility of saving it falls to a young woman who was never meant to inherit anything.

Sharp, disciplined and determined to prove herself, Yi-hsin steps into a world of negotiations, export contracts and boardroom rivalries dominated by men, working alongside an idealistic scholar and a savvy outside financier as she fights to modernize the family enterprise. As she pushes against the expectations placed on a daughter, she must balance loyalty to her father and to tradition against the changes a struggling business demands.

Filmed largely in the Hailu dialect of Hakka and steeped in the textures of 1950s Taiwan, the series turns the tea trade into a portrait of an era of economic upheaval and quiet revolution. It is a handsome, restrained family-business saga about ambition, inheritance and a woman determined to carry a dynasty into a new age.
