About The Red Sleeve
The Red Sleeve (Korean title Okssoye Bulgeun Kkeutdong) is a South Korean historical romance that aired on MBC from November 2021 to January 2022. Set in the Joseon dynasty palace, it follows Seong Deok-im, a court lady who values her independence and the modest freedoms of her chosen life, and Yi San, the Crown Prince and future King Jeongjo, whose growing love for her collides with his duty to the throne. Based on the novel of the same name by Kang Mi-gang, the series reframes a well-documented chapter of Korean history through the perspective of the woman at its center.
Rather than treating the romance as a simple fairy tale, the drama foregrounds Deok-im's desire for autonomy. As a palace servant she understands that becoming a royal concubine would mean surrendering the small but real agency she has cultivated among her fellow court ladies. Yi San, meanwhile, navigates court factions, the long shadow of his father Crown Prince Sado, and the weight of an empire, all while quietly devoted to a woman who repeatedly declines the elevation he offers. Their restrained, slow-burning relationship unfolds across years of palace life.
Praised for its tasteful, emotionally precise storytelling, strong performances, and faithful yet humane reading of Joseon court history, The Red Sleeve became one of the most acclaimed sageuk (period) dramas of its era. It was a major ratings success in South Korea, peaking above seventeen percent nationally, and earned wide recognition at the Baeksang Arts Awards and MBC Drama Awards. The series is frequently cited as a benchmark for character-driven historical romance.
