About Mr. Queen
Mr. Queen (Cheorin Wanghu) is a 2020 to 2021 South Korean fusion-sageuk comedy that aired on the cable network tvN. The premise is a body-swap: Jang Bong-hwan, a brash, hyper-confident chef working in the Blue House kitchen of the present day, suffers an accident and wakes up in the Joseon era, his modern male consciousness trapped inside the body of Queen Kim So-yong, the young wife of King Cheoljong. Convinced at first that he is dreaming, Bong-hwan slowly realizes the swap is real and that he must survive palace life while keeping his secret hidden.
Armed with a 21st-century attitude, a chef's instincts, and zero patience for court etiquette, the displaced soul upends the rigid customs of the royal household. The Queen's sudden change in personality baffles her attendants and unsettles the powerful Andong Kim clan that put her on the throne, while drawing the wary attention of King Cheoljong, who is quietly waging his own hidden battle against the regents and dowagers who control the court. What begins as a fight to get back home gradually becomes entanglement in palace intrigue, factional power struggles, and an unexpected, evolving relationship with the king.
Adapted loosely from the Chinese web series Go Princess Go, the drama pairs broad, fast-paced physical comedy with genuine political tension and emotional stakes. It became one of the highest-rated dramas in tvN history and a major streaming hit internationally, praised for Shin Hye-sun's dual-register performance as both the modern chef and the Joseon queen. Its blend of slapstick, satire, and sincerity, along with a clean comedic take on the gender-swap conceit, helped make it one of the most talked-about Korean dramas of its season.
