About Gonul Dagi
Gonul Dagi, known internationally as An Anatolian Tale, is a warm-hearted rural family comedy-drama set in the fictional steppe town of Gedelli in central Anatolia. Premiering on Turkey's state broadcaster TRT 1 in 2020, the series grew out of the gentle, observational stories of writer Mustafa Ciftci and built its reputation on a wholesome, slow-burning portrait of small-town life. Rather than melodrama or villains, it finds its drama in everyday hopes, family loyalty and the quiet dignity of ordinary people, all framed against the wide skies and folk traditions of the Anatolian heartland.
At its center are three close-knit cousins from the Kaya family who have shared a tinkering, inventive streak since childhood and keep dreaming up homespun gadgets and small enterprises in their workshop. The most prominent of them, Taner, is a kind and stubborn young man whose long, tender pursuit of his childhood sweetheart Dilek runs like a thread through the show, complicated by family expectations, misunderstandings and the slow pace of courtship in a traditional community. Around the cousins gather mothers, elders and neighbors whose feuds, matchmaking schemes and reconciliations give the series its gentle humor.
Across its seasons Gonul Dagi balances light comedy with sincere emotion, treating themes of love, marriage, family honor and belonging with affection rather than sensationalism. The show leans on its picturesque Anatolian setting, folk music and a tone of warmth and decency that made it a fixture of weekend family viewing in Turkey. Its slogan, a tale of the Anatolian steppe, captures a series that celebrates community, perseverance and the bonds of an extended family while keeping its storytelling firmly clean and tasteful.
