About Hackerville
Hackerville is a Romanian-German cyber-crime thriller co-produced by HBO Europe and the German pay channel TNT Serie. The six-episode limited series follows Lisa Metz, a young federal cybercrime investigator based in Frankfurt, who is sent back to her childhood home of Timisoara in western Romania after a major German bank is paralyzed by an online attack. The trail of the breach appears to lead to a loose community of local hackers, and Lisa must navigate a place she left behind years earlier while the clock runs on a fast-moving investigation.
Once in Timisoara, Lisa is paired with Adam Sandor, a weary local police officer whose methods and instincts clash with her by-the-book, data-driven approach. Their uneasy partnership becomes the emotional spine of the show as the case widens beyond a single bank job into a tangled network of online fraud, organized crime, and personal grudges. The series uses the contrast between Frankfurt's corporate sheen and Timisoara's improvised, resourceful underground to frame a story about belonging, identity, and the gray zones of the modern internet.
At the center of the mystery is Cipi, a gifted but vulnerable teenage gamer whose talents make him both an asset and a target. As Lisa and Adam close in, they discover that the people behind the attack are not the cartoonish criminals the headlines imagine but neighbors, friends, and family caught up in something larger than themselves. Praised for its grounded depiction of Romania's tech scene and its bilingual texture, Hackerville earned a Grimme-Preis, one of German television's most respected honors, for its fiction work.
