About The Sleepers

Set in Prague in the closing weeks of 1989, The Sleepers (Bez vedomi) unfolds in the charged interval just before the Velvet Revolution, when the Communist regime is visibly cracking and no one is certain what will replace it. Marie, a Czech emigree, returns home from years of exile in London alongside her dissident husband, only for a sudden car crash to upend everything. When she comes to, her husband has vanished and the official accounts do not add up.

What begins as a search for a missing spouse pulls Marie into a half-lit world of secret police, informers, and long-buried sleeper agents whose loyalties were arranged decades earlier and may still be active. As the old order trembles, everyone around her seems to be hedging their bets, and the line between protector and handler keeps dissolving.

Created by Ivan Zacharias, the series treats the end of the regime less as a triumphant turning point than as a fog of paranoia, where divided loyalties, quiet betrayals, and the temptation to reinvent the past leave Marie unsure who is telling the truth, including the people closest to her.
