About House of Ninjas
House of Ninjas is a 2024 Japanese action-drama series for Netflix, created by filmmaker Dave Boyle together with star Kento Kaku, who also serves as a co-creator and producer. It centers on the Tawara family, the last descendants of a once-legendary shinobi clan, who have walked away from the secret world of the ninja to attempt ordinary modern lives in present-day Japan. Outwardly they run a small family sake business and move through the quiet routines of work, school, and home, but the discipline, grief, and unspoken history of their former calling sit just beneath the surface.
When a national threat begins to surface and old ties to the shadow world reach back toward them, the Tawaras are slowly and reluctantly pulled away from the normal existence they swore to protect. Each member of the family carries a different relationship to their inheritance, from a son who wants nothing to do with the clan's past to elders who can never fully let it go, and the crisis forces them to confront what they have buried. The series treats its action and danger in broad, non-graphic terms, keeping the emotional focus on the people rather than on spectacle.
At its heart, House of Ninjas is a story about family, legacy, and reluctant duty, asking whether a person can ever truly leave behind the role they were born into. It blends a grounded family drama with the iconography of the ninja, weaving themes of secrecy, loyalty, and generational obligation through a contemporary setting. Kento Kaku leads the ensemble alongside veteran screen actors Tae Kimura and Yosuke Eguchi, anchoring a series that earned attention as one of Netflix Japan's most prominent original action-dramas.
