About Hunger
Hunger is a 2023 Thai feature-length culinary drama for Netflix, directed by Sitisiri Mongkolsiri and written by Kongdej Jaturanrasamee. It follows Aoy, a young cook running her family's modest stir-fried noodle stall, who is unexpectedly recruited into Hunger, the elite private fine-dining crew commanded by the celebrated and tyrannical Chef Paul. Pulled from the street into a world of plated spectacle and obscene wealth, she discovers a kitchen that runs on fear, exhaustion, and the relentless pursuit of perfection.
Under Chef Paul's brutal mentorship, Aoy's raw talent is sharpened into something dangerous, and she begins to crave the recognition and status that haute cuisine promises. But the closer she gets to the top, the more clearly she sees the cost: a brigade pushed past its limits, a mentor whose genius is inseparable from his cruelty, and a hunger that consumes everyone it touches. A supportive sous chef, Tone, becomes one of her few human anchors as the pressure mounts.
Acclaimed as a sharp class parable told through food, Hunger uses the gap between street eats and luxury dining to ask who gets to be called great, and what that title is built on. As Aoy weighs ambition against the family and craft that shaped her, she must decide how much of herself she is willing to sacrifice for a seat at the table. Lead actress Chutimon Chuengcharoensukying won the International Emmy Award for Best Actress for the role.
