About Last Exile
Last Exile is a 2003 anime produced by the studio Gonzo and directed by Koichi Chigira, set on the fictional world of Prester, where flight is woven into everyday life. The series follows Claus Valca and Lavie Head, two young sky couriers who pilot a small aircraft called a vanship to carry messages and cargo across a dangerous sky. Their ordinary working lives change when they accept a mission to deliver a mysterious young girl named Alvis Hamilton to the legendary battleship Silvana.
The world of Prester is divided between two nations, Anatoray and Disith, locked in a long-running war that is fought under a strict code governing aerial combat. As Claus and Lavie become entangled with the crew of the Silvana and its enigmatic commander, they discover that Alvis is the key to a far larger secret connected to the history of their world and a powerful organization known as the Guild that oversees the rules of the conflict.
Renowned for its retro-future visual style, Last Exile blends early-twentieth-century aviation design with imaginative steampunk technology, giving its vanships and battleships a distinctive hand-built character. The series pairs this aesthetic with a coming-of-age story about loyalty, ambition, and the desire to fly freely, and it remains a frequently cited example of the studio's early-2000s work.
