About Lie to Me
Lie to Me follows Dr. Cal Lightman, a brilliant deception expert who can read the truth written across a person's face. Where most people see a polite smile or a calm denial, Lightman sees the flicker of a micro-expression, the tell-tale shrug, the half-second of contempt that betrays a lie. Heading a private consulting firm called The Lightman Group, he and his team are hired by police, government agencies, and private clients to crack cases that hinge on what people are hiding.
Each investigation peels back layers of fear, guilt, and motive, with Lightman insisting that the body never lies even when the mouth does. The series drew its science from the real research of psychologist Paul Ekman, lending its interrogations a grounded, almost forensic edge. Yet for all his uncanny ability to spot a falsehood in others, Lightman is haunted by what he cannot control in himself, and the same gift that solves crimes corrodes his trust and keeps intimacy at arm's length.
Sharp, prickly, and addictively watchable, the show pairs procedural puzzles with the messy human cost of always knowing the truth. The ensemble grounds the cleverness in real emotion across three seasons on Fox. The cast is led by Tim Roth as Cal Lightman, alongside Kelli Williams and Monica Raymund.
