About Ludwig

John Taylor is a reclusive crossword and puzzle compiler who works under the pen name Ludwig, content to live alone with his routines and his unshakeable distrust of the messy world outside. His tidy existence is upended when his sister-in-law Lucy arrives with alarming news: John's identical twin brother James, a Cambridge police detective, has vanished without a trace.

Desperate for answers and certain something sinister is afoot, Lucy hatches a wild plan. She persuades the painfully shy John to slip into James's life, badge and all, and report for duty as Detective Chief Inspector at the local station. To his own astonishment, John's relentless logic and gift for patterns make him a startlingly effective sleuth, cracking baffling murders even as he scrambles to keep his deception from unravelling.

Equal parts cosy whodunit and tender comedy of manners, the series threads its case-of-the-week mysteries through a warm, slow-burning search for the missing James. Brimming with wit, heart, and beautifully knotty puzzles, Ludwig stars David Mitchell as the unlikely impostor-detective and Anna Maxwell Martin as the sharp, grieving woman who pulls him out of his shell.
