About Maria Clara at Ibarra
Maria Clara at Ibarra is a Philippine fantasy period drama that aired on GMA Network from October 2022 to February 2023 as part of the Telebabad lineup. The series follows Klay Infantes, a present-day Gen-Z nursing student who has little patience for the required reading of Jose Rizal's classic novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. When she is mysteriously transported into the world of the books, she finds herself living alongside the very characters she once dismissed, and her modern attitude collides with the customs, manners, and injustices of 19th-century colonial Philippines.
Inside the story, Klay becomes entangled in the lives of the idealistic Crisostomo Ibarra and the gentle, devout Maria Clara, witnessing firsthand the romance, betrayal, and social unrest that Rizal wrote about. As the narrative moves from Noli Me Tangere into El Filibusterismo, Ibarra transforms into the vengeful jeweler Simoun, and Klay grows close to the kind-hearted Fidel, a fictional companion who helps her navigate the perilous world of the revolutionaries. Through her eyes, the audience rediscovers the novels not as dusty assignments but as living, urgent human dramas.
Created and written by Suzette Doctolero and directed by Zig Dulay, the show was widely praised as an educational and tasteful adaptation that made Rizal's literature accessible to a new generation. It blended a heartfelt time-travel premise with faithful retellings of the source material, sparking renewed national interest in the novels and earning strong ratings and critical acclaim. The series later streamed internationally on Netflix, extending its reach well beyond its original broadcast run.
