About Mask Girl
Mask Girl is a 2023 South Korean Netflix series that follows Kim Mo-mi, an ordinary office worker who has grown up deeply insecure about her looks. By day she fades into the background of a routine corporate job, but at night she leads a secret double life as a masked online streamer, performing for an audience that adores the confident persona she can only become when her face is hidden. The mask gives her the validation she never feels she can earn as herself, and that craving slowly pulls her into a world she cannot control.
Adapted from a popular webtoon, the series is built as a layered, multi-perspective story that hands the narrative from one character to the next and moves across years, so that the same events are re-seen through different eyes. What looks like one person's choice from the outside becomes something far more complicated once the show reveals the loneliness, longing, and small humiliations underneath it. Three actresses share the central role across different stages of Mo-mi's life, a structural choice that lets the series examine how identity, self-image, and the relentless pressure of beauty standards reshape a single person over time.
As the perspectives accumulate, Mask Girl widens into a darker chain of consequences that touches the people drawn into Mo-mi's orbit, including a lonely co-worker and a fiercely protective mother. The series treats these turns with a tonal mix of tragedy, tension, and bleak humor rather than spectacle, keeping its real focus on what it costs to be seen and the lengths people will go to in order to feel wanted. It is a story about masks of every kind, the ones we wear online and the ones we wear in front of the people closest to us.
