About Milky Way
Milky Way is a Greek coming-of-age drama created, written, and directed by Vasilis Kekatos, the filmmaker who won the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival. Produced by Foss Productions for the Greek broadcaster Mega Channel, the eight-episode series premiered in late 2023 and streamed in Greece on Vodafone TV. It marked Kekatos's move into long-form television and was positioned as one of the more ambitious recent Greek youth dramas.
The story is set in a remote inland mountain town and follows Maria, a high school senior who dreams of leaving home to become a dancer. Her plans are upended when she learns she is pregnant by her longtime boyfriend Tasos, who works at the town's only gas station. As her conservative family and community expect her to settle into the role of a young mother, the arrival of Jo, a new classmate from Athens, opens up a different sense of what her future might look like.
Across its single season, Milky Way balances intimate character study with the wider tension between individual desire and the expectations of a small, traditional community. It was acquired for international distribution by Fifth Season and screened in industry showcases tied to the Series Mania festival, helping raise its profile beyond Greece. Reviews highlighted its atmosphere, its focus on young characters at a crossroads, and Kekatos's distinctive directorial voice.
