About Mr Inbetween

Ray Shoesmith is a problem solver. Need a debt collected, a message sent, or a person permanently removed from the equation? He is your man, calm and courteous, the sort who holds the door for you before breaking your fingers. The catch is that Ray is also a devoted dad, a loyal mate, and a fellow trying very hard to be a decent boyfriend, which turns out to be far harder than the killing.

Set in suburban Sydney, the show follows Ray as he shuttles between school pickups, anger-management classes, hospital visits to his ailing brother, and the brutal odd jobs that pay the bills. It refuses to glamorise any of it. The violence arrives suddenly and ends just as fast, while the real drama lives in the quiet moments: a chat with his daughter, a beer with a friend, a girlfriend slowly realising the man she loves is not who he pretends to be.

Lean, deadpan, and unexpectedly tender, Mr Inbetween earned a cult following and rapturous reviews across its three seasons before ending exactly when it wanted to. It grew out of a 2005 indie film and was shepherded to the screen by its quietly remarkable creator and star, Scott Ryan.
