About Penny Dreadful
Penny Dreadful is a gothic horror drama set in the fog-shrouded streets of Victorian London, where the most famous monsters and figures of classic literature are drawn together into a single shadowy world. Created by John Logan and produced for Showtime and Sky, the series weaves characters from Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Picture of Dorian Gray into an original mythology. At its heart stands Vanessa Ives, a woman haunted by dark forces who searches for answers about the nature of her affliction. The show takes its name from the cheap, sensational Victorian penny publications that thrilled readers with tales of horror and the macabre.
The first season follows the African explorer Sir Malcolm Murray as he assembles an unlikely band to find his missing daughter Mina, recruiting the mysterious Vanessa, the American sharpshooter Ethan Chandler, and the brilliant young Dr. Victor Frankenstein. As their quest unfolds, each character is revealed to carry private burdens and supernatural secrets. Vanessa's struggle with a possessing spirit becomes the emotional and spiritual center of the narrative. The atmosphere is lush, literary, and steeped in dread, blending romance and tragedy with genuine terror.
Across three seasons the series deepens its themes of faith, isolation, monstrousness, and the longing to be loved despite one's nature. Witches, vampires, and the creature stitched together by Frankenstein all orbit the question of whether Vanessa can be saved or whether she is destined for damnation. The show was praised for its rich production design, ambitious writing, and the powerhouse central performance of Eva Green. Penny Dreadful concluded in 2016, followed years later by a separate Los Angeles set spinoff, leaving the original London saga as a complete and self-contained gothic epic.
