Pokemon is the long-running anime adaptation of the wildly popular Nintendo video game franchise created by Satoshi Tajiri. Produced by studio OLM and first broadcast on TV Tokyo in April 1997, the series follows Ash Ketchum (known as Satoshi in Japan), an enthusiastic ten-year-old from Pallet Town who sets out on a journey to become a Pokemon Master. Accompanied by his loyal and famously stubborn partner Pikachu, Ash travels across diverse regions catching, training, and battling the creatures known as Pokemon.

Across its many series and arcs, Ash competes in regional Gym battles and prestigious Pokemon Leagues, befriending a rotating cast of traveling companions such as Misty and Brock along the way. Recurring antagonists Jessie, James, and the talking Meowth of Team Rocket pursue Pikachu in scheme after scheme, providing comic relief and the occasional surprising moment of heart. The show balances episodic adventure with overarching themes of friendship, perseverance, and the bond between trainer and Pokemon.

Spanning over a thousand episodes and twenty-five years of the original continuity, the Pokemon anime became a global cultural phenomenon, spawning numerous theatrical films, spin-offs, and merchandise. Ash's storyline reached a long-awaited milestone when he finally became World Champion, and the original series concluded in 2023 to make way for new protagonists. Few animated series have matched its longevity or its influence on a generation of fans worldwide.
