About Quynh Bup Be (Vietnam)
Quynh Bup Be (Quynh the Doll) is a Vietnamese television drama that aired on state broadcaster VTV in 2018. Directed by Mai Hong Phong, the series follows Quynh, a young woman from a rural highland area who is deceived and forced into a brothel run by a violent crime boss. Across 28 episodes it traces her years of captivity, her attempts to protect a child, and her long struggle to reclaim a life of her own.
The show opened on VTV1 in June 2018 but was paused after six episodes following public debate over its frank depiction of trafficking, violence and prostitution. After a review it resumed on the entertainment channel VTV3 with a later time slot and a viewer advisory, becoming one of the most discussed Vietnamese dramas of the year and a frequent reference point in conversations about how local television handles difficult social subject matter.
Built around a large ensemble of brothel residents, enforcers and outside figures who drift in and out of Quynh's orbit, the drama blends crime thriller beats with the long-form domestic melodrama that defines VTV's prime-time output. Its breakout performances, particularly the central trio of Quynh, the scheming Mong My and the conflicted enforcer Canh, turned the cast into household names and helped launch a wider wave of socially themed Vietnamese serials.
