About Reyka
Reyka is a South African crime drama set among the sugarcane fields and coastal towns of KwaZulu-Natal, created by Rohan Dickson for M-Net and Showmax. At its centre is Dr. Reyka Gama, a gifted criminologist whose work lets her step inside the logic of violent offenders and read the patterns others miss. That talent is inseparable from her history: abducted as a child and held for years before she got free, she carries the experience into every case, and the show treats that backstory with care rather than spectacle.
When a series of killings unsettles the cane-cutting communities outside Durban, Reyka is brought in to build a profile and help the local police understand who they are looking for. The investigation is as much about the region as the crime, drawing in farm owners and labourers, family ties and old grievances, and the quiet pressures of a place where everyone seems to know everyone. The storytelling keeps its darker material in non-graphic, suggestive terms, letting psychology and atmosphere carry the tension.
Threaded through the casework is Reyka's fraught, unresolved bond with Angus Speelman, the farmer who once held her captive, whose continued presence in her life complicates her sense of self and her judgement. Across two seasons the series widens from a single hunt into a study of trauma, motherhood, and the long shadow a survivor learns to live alongside, anchored by Kim Engelbrecht's award-winning lead performance.
