Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf is a 2024 fantasy anime adapting Isuna Hasekura's acclaimed light novel series, produced by Passione. Set in a medieval European world on the cusp of economic modernization, it follows Kraft Lawrence, a traveling merchant in his mid twenties who dreams of one day opening his own shop. His ordinary trade route is upended when he discovers a curious passenger asleep in his cart of furs, a young woman with the ears and tail of a wolf.
She is Holo, the centuries old harvest deity once worshipped in the village of Pasloe, now largely forgotten as the farmers place their faith in the Church rather than the old gods. Lonely and homesick, Holo strikes a bargain with Lawrence: she will lend her sharp wit and uncanny instinct for people to his business if he agrees to escort her north toward her distant homeland of Yoitsu. What begins as a practical arrangement gradually deepens into a warm, slow burning companionship.
Rather than relying on grand battles, the series finds its tension in commerce, currency speculation, debased coinage, and the delicate politics of guilds and the Church. Holo's wisdom and Lawrence's mercantile know how repeatedly pull the pair out of trouble, while their teasing, candid conversations form the genuine heart of the story. The 2024 production retells the saga from the beginning with updated animation and the returning leads from the original 2008 adaptation.
