About Vinland Saga
Vinland Saga is the anime adaptation of Makoto Yukimura's acclaimed seinen manga, set against the brutal backdrop of early eleventh century Northern Europe during the height of the Viking age. The story follows Thorfinn, the young son of a legendary warrior named Thors who once fled the violence of the Jomsvikings to live in peace on a remote Icelandic farm. When raiders led by the cunning mercenary Askeladd arrive and shatter that fragile peace, Thorfinn's life is set on a path of bloodshed and obsession. Witnessing his father's death firsthand, the boy vows revenge and attaches himself to the very band of killers responsible.
The first season, produced by Wit Studio, traces Thorfinn's years growing up among Askeladd's mercenary company as he repeatedly challenges his father's killer to formal duels, demanding satisfaction for the murder. Against the sweeping canvas of real history, the narrative weaves in the political ambitions of the young Danish prince Canute and the broader war for the throne of England. The second season, produced by MAPPA and titled the Farmland Saga, marks a dramatic tonal shift as a broken and enslaved Thorfinn is forced to confront a life without his guiding purpose of vengeance. Sold to a farm, he labors alongside a fellow slave named Einar and slowly begins to question whether a true warrior must be one who has no enemies. Drawing on the words and pacifist ideals planted by his late father, Thorfinn starts to imagine a peaceful land far across the sea called Vinland, free from war and slavery. The anime is celebrated for its mature themes, historical detail, and a protagonist whose journey moves from rage toward redemption and the search for meaning.
