About Tabbar
Tabbar is a 2021 Indian crime drama that streamed on SonyLIV, set in the city of Jalandhar in Punjab and told largely in Hindi and Punjabi. The title is a Punjabi word for family, and the series lives up to it: at its heart is Omkar Singh, a retired, soft-spoken former policeman who now runs a small grocery shop and asks for nothing more than a quiet life with his wife and two grown sons. Created and written by Harman Wadala and directed by Ajitpal Singh, the show opens on an ordinary household and then quietly pulls the floor out from under it.
When a single fateful night threatens one of his children, the mild-mannered Omkar, played by Pavan Malhotra, makes a split-second choice to protect his family. That choice sets off a chain of consequences that he must then manage, contain, and cover, and each step to keep his loved ones safe draws him deeper into territory he spent his whole life avoiding. His wife Sargun, played by Supriya Pathak, and his elder son Harpreet, an earnest civil-service aspirant played by Gagan Arora, are pulled into the same widening circle, forced to weigh loyalty against conscience as the family closes ranks.
Rather than dwell on the mechanics of crime, Tabbar keeps its lens on the moral spiral, the way one protective act demands another, and the quiet toll it takes on people who still love one another. Violence and danger are present but treated in restrained, non-graphic terms, with the real suspense coming from secrets, suspicion, and the question of how far an ordinary father will go. Widely praised on release, the series swept the drama categories at the 2022 Filmfare OTT Awards, winning honors for its direction and for the performances of Malhotra, Pathak, and Arora.
