About The Gryphon
The Gryphon (German: Der Greif) is a six-part German young-adult fantasy adventure for Amazon Prime Video, adapted from the 1989 novel by Wolfgang and Heike Hohlbein. Set in the small town of Krefelden in the early 1990s, it follows Mark, a sensitive teenager who is bullied at school and weighed down by grief and family secrets. When he uncovers an old family chronicle, he learns that the strange visions running through his bloodline are real, and that he can cross into a dark parallel world ruled by an ancient evil known as the Gryphon.
That other realm, the Black Tower, is a bleak and dangerous place where time and reality bend, and where people from Mark's town have a way of disappearing. As the threat from the Tower reaches back into his ordinary life, Mark is pulled between two worlds, trying to protect the people he loves while piecing together what really happened to his family. He is not alone: his loyal friends Memo and Becky are drawn into the mystery alongside him, turning a private burden into a shared quest.
Blending small-town nostalgia with eerie portal fantasy, the series leans on classic coming-of-age beats: first friendships tested under pressure, the search for courage, and a teenager learning that the line between imagination and reality may be thinner than anyone believes. The peril is handled in atmospheric, non-graphic terms, keeping the focus on adventure, loyalty, and the slow unmasking of a long-hidden danger rather than on shock.
