About The Head
The Head is an English-language thriller produced in Spain by The Mediapro Studio for HBO Asia and Hulu Japan, first released in 2020. Its opening season strands a small skeleton crew, the so-called winterers, at the isolated Polaris VI research station in Antarctica through the long sunless polar winter. When the summer commander Johan Berg returns to relieve them, he finds the base in ruins, most of the crew dead or missing, and only a handful of survivors left to explain what happened.
The story is built around a survivor's account that cannot be taken at face value. Station doctor Maggie Mitchell offers a version of the murders and disappearances, but as Johan pieces together the timeline he realizes the testimony keeps shifting, and that everyone trapped at the base had something to hide. The series leans on the claustrophobia of a place no one can leave, where months of darkness, dwindling trust, and a possible killer among the few remaining faces turn the station into a sealed-room puzzle.
Anchored by Álvaro Morte as the station cook Ramón Lazaro, John Lynch as the brilliant and manipulative lead scientist Arthur Wilde, Katharine O'Donnelly as the unreliable narrator Maggie Mitchell, Richard Sammel as Erik Osterland and Alexandre Willaume as Johan Berg, The Head became one of the higher-profile international co-productions of its era. Later seasons widen the mystery beyond the ice, following the fallout of Wilde's research and the lies that began at Polaris VI.
