The Mire

The Mire (Rojst) is a Polish period mystery-drama created and directed by Jan Holoubek, first released in 2018 and followed by a second season set in 1997. Unfolding in a fictional provincial town in communist-era Poland, it pairs a seasoned, world-weary newspaper veteran with an idealistic younger journalist as they pull at the threads of a tangle of local crimes. What begins as a routine assignment leads them toward a long-buried secret that the town has quietly agreed to forget.

The title refers to the marshy wetland that surrounds the town, a swamp that swallows whatever is thrown into it and never gives it back. It works as a metaphor for the show itself, where the past refuses to stay submerged and where everyone, from local officials to ordinary residents, seems caught in something they cannot escape. The series treats its mysteries with restraint, keeping the focus on the investigation, the slow accumulation of evidence, and the moral cost of asking inconvenient questions under an authoritarian system.
