About Tonbo!
Tonbo! (also known as Oi! Tonbo) is a 2024 Japanese sports anime produced by the studio OLM and directed by Oh Jin-koo, adapted from the long-running manga written by Ken Kawasaki and drawn by Yu Furusawa. It is set on Hijiri, a small and remote island in southern Japan, where a spirited young girl named Tonbo Oi has grown up barefoot and free, raised by her fisherman grandfather. She has spent her childhood swinging a battered set of clubs across the island's makeshift fairways, and golf is as natural to her as the sea and the wind.
The story turns when Kazuyoshi Igarashi, a disgraced former touring pro who has drifted away from the game, arrives on the island and witnesses Tonbo's raw, untaught talent. Recognizing something rare in her instinctive swing, he becomes her reluctant coach, and the two begin to shape her gift into the discipline of competitive golf. The series follows their growing bond, his slow road back to the sport he loved, and her first steps from a tiny island toward a much larger world.
Warm, gentle, and grounded in the rhythms of island life, Tonbo! blends a heartfelt coming-of-age story with the quiet tension of the game. It premiered on TV Tokyo and its affiliates in April 2024, ran for thirteen episodes through June, and streamed internationally on Prime Video, earning praise for its sincere characters and its affectionate portrait of a community that rallies around one girl's dream.
