About Warrior
Warrior is a martial-arts crime saga set against the brutal backdrop of the Tong Wars in late 1870s San Francisco Chinatown. The series follows Ah Sahm, a Chinese-born martial-arts prodigy who arrives in America in search of his estranged sister and is quickly pulled into the violent underworld of the tongs, the rival criminal gangs that controlled the streets, opium dens and brothels of the immigrant quarter. Developed from an original treatment written by Bruce Lee in the early 1970s, the show fuses kinetic fight choreography with a sweeping period drama about power, race and belonging.
Recruited as a hatchet man for the Hop Wei, one of Chinatown's most powerful tongs, Ah Sahm rises through the ranks alongside the ambitious heir Young Jun while clashing with the rival Long Zii. Beyond the gang conflict, the series examines the corruption of city hall, the rise of anti-Chinese sentiment among white labor factions, and the impossible choices faced by immigrants trying to survive in a hostile new world. Characters such as the cunning brothel owner Ah Toy and an array of police, politicians and crime bosses create a dense, morally complex ensemble.
Across three seasons the show widens its scope from street-level turf battles to citywide political warfare, exploring loyalty, ambition and the cost of violence. Praised for its action set pieces, its richly drawn Asian American leads and its willingness to tackle the historical realities of the era, Warrior earned a devoted following that helped it survive a network change from Cinemax to HBO Max before its conclusion.
