About Zenshu
Zenshu is a Japanese original television anime produced by the studio MAPPA. It premiered in January 2025 with international streaming handled through Crunchyroll, and was directed by Mitsue Yamazaki from a story credited to the studio's original project. The series centers on Natsuko Hirose, a celebrated young anime director who rose to fame directing romance films but who finds herself creatively stuck and unable to understand the emotion at the heart of love stories.
After a setback in her personal life leaves her struggling, Natsuko collapses and awakens inside the world of A Tale of Perishing, the action fantasy film she loved as a child and that first inspired her to become an animator. Trapped in this world and confronted with characters and a doomed storyline she knows by heart, she discovers that she can use her skills as an animator to reshape what happens, drawing new outcomes into existence and altering the fate she remembers from the screen.
As Natsuko allies with the film's heroes against the monstrous threat known as the Void, the series blends isekai adventure with a meta commentary on the craft of animation and storytelling. Zenshu uses its premise to explore what it means to create, to find inspiration, and to take responsibility for the stories one tells, framing Natsuko's growth as both a fantasy quest and an artist's coming-of-age.
