Character Arc
Atom is a remarkably advanced child robot whose gentle nature and strong moral compass make him one of Pluto's most beloved characters. Based on the title figure of Osamu Tezuka's Astro Boy, he is reimagined here within Urasawa's more somber world as a thoughtful young robot capable of deep empathy, curiosity, and care for both humans and his fellow artificial beings.
Within the story, Atom is one of the seven great robots and therefore one of the targets at the heart of the mystery. His warmth and innocence stand in poignant contrast to the violence circling the cast, and his bond with his sister Uran and with detective Gesicht gives the series much of its emotional center. His perspective often embodies the show's hope amid grief.
As the investigation deepens, Atom becomes central to the series' meditation on what it means to be alive. His ability to feel sorrow, fear, and compassion raises the question of whether feeling, rather than origin, defines a person, and his arc carries the anime's anti-war message with particular tenderness. The character is voiced in Japanese by Yoko Hikasa.
