Character Arc
Chise Hatori begins the story as a deeply wounded young woman who has been passed between relatives and rejected her whole life because of her ability to see spirits. Having lost the will to live, she allows herself to be sold at a secret auction, expecting to be used and discarded. Instead she is bought by the mage Elias Ainsworth, who tells her she will be his apprentice and his bride, and for the first time she is offered a place where she is wanted.
Learning that she is a Sleigh Beggy, a rare conduit of magic whose gift shortens her own lifespan, Chise throws herself into studying magic and helping the fae, witches, and spirits she encounters. Her instinct to sacrifice herself for others repeatedly endangers her, and much of her growth comes from learning that her life has value and that she is allowed to want to survive. Encounters with curses, dragons, and a hostile alchemist test both her resolve and her body.
Over the course of the series Chise transforms from a passive girl resigned to death into someone who actively chooses her own path, sets boundaries with Elias, and fights for the people she loves. Her evolving, complicated relationship with Elias forms the emotional core of the story, as she comes to understand him, challenge him, and ultimately decide for herself what their bond will mean.
