Character Arc
Elias Ainsworth is a tall, imposing mage whose head resembles the bleached skull of a horned beast, and whose true nature is a mystery even to himself. Centuries old and existing somewhere between human and inhuman, he is known by names that suggest a dark past, and he keeps the details of his origins hidden. When he buys Chise at auction, he frames it as taking an apprentice and a future bride, though he barely understands the human emotions such words carry.
As he lives alongside Chise, Elias is forced to confront feelings he cannot name and a possessiveness he does not understand. His detached, sometimes childlike grasp of human relationships leads him to make serious mistakes, including acts driven by fear of losing her. These failures become a turning point, pushing him to genuinely try to learn empathy rather than simply imitate it.
Across the series Elias slowly grows from a being who studies humanity from the outside into someone capable of vulnerability, regret, and devotion. His relationship with Chise reshapes him, and the gradual revelation of what he is and where he came from drives much of the story's mystery, making his arc a mirror to Chise's own journey toward becoming whole.
