About The Ancient Magus' Bride
The Ancient Magus' Bride follows Chise Hatori, a teenage girl who has spent her life unwanted and adrift, cursed with the ability to see spirits and creatures invisible to ordinary people. Worn down by abandonment and despair, she sells herself at a clandestine auction, only to be purchased for an enormous sum by Elias Ainsworth, a towering mage with the bleached skull of a beast for a head. Rather than treat her as property, Elias declares that Chise will become his apprentice and, one day, his bride.
Taken to Elias's home in the misty English countryside, Chise discovers she is a Sleigh Beggy, an exceedingly rare being who can absorb and radiate magical energy, a gift that draws fae, dragons, and darker forces toward her even as it slowly burns away her life. Under Elias's strange and gentle guidance she begins to study magic and alchemy, meeting witches, faerie folk, and the spirits of the land, and for the first time finding people who want her to stay alive.
As Chise grows in power and confidence, the story deepens into a meditation on belonging, grief, and what it means to be human. Elias, who does not fully understand human emotion and conceals secrets about his own nature, learns alongside her, and the bond between the cast-aside girl and the inhuman mage becomes the heart of a lush, melancholy fairy tale about two broken beings teaching each other how to live.
