Character Arc

Gintoki Sakata is the silver-permed, dead-eyed heart of Gintama, a samurai who fought in the war against the alien Amanto and came out the other side as a lazy, sugar-addicted slacker who runs the Yorozuya odd-jobs shop. On the surface he is all sarcasm, picked noses and unpaid bills, forever broke and forever dodging his landlady's rent demands.

Beneath the deadbeat comedy, though, Gintoki lives by a stubborn personal code: he will throw himself into any fight to protect the people he cares about, even when there is no reward and no thanks. Flashbacks to his days as the feared 'Shiroyasha' reveal the heavy past he carries, and his refusal to abandon a friend repeatedly turns goofy jobs into life-or-death stands.

Across the series Gintoki grows from a wandering loner into the anchor of a found family, mentoring Shinpachi and Kagura while clashing with old comrades and new threats. His blend of slovenly humor and unbreakable loyalty makes him one of anime's most beloved leads, and the emotional core that keeps Gintama's wildest gags grounded.

? Frequently Asked Questions

Gintoki Sakata is voiced in Japanese by Tomokazu Sugita, whose dry, deadpan delivery is widely regarded as one of the defining performances of the role and a signature part of his career.

Gintoki runs an odd-jobs business that takes any task no matter how strange, but he is terrible with money, easily distracted by sweets and JUMP magazine, and far too soft-hearted to refuse people who cannot pay. The result is a hero who saves the day yet can rarely cover the rent.
