About Gintama
Gintama is set in an alternate Edo-era Japan where towering aliens known as the Amanto have conquered the country, outlawed the samurai sword and dragged feudal Tokyo into a bizarre future of flip phones, motor scooters and giant space cruisers parked over the old castle town. Out of this clash of swords and spaceships steps Gintoki Sakata, a silver-haired former rebel who now runs a do-anything odd-jobs shop called Yorozuya, taking on absolutely any task as long as the rent gets paid.
Joined by the wide-eyed straight man Shinpachi Shimura and the impossibly strong, umbrella-toting alien girl Kagura, Gintoki drifts from one ridiculous job to the next, whether that means hunting a lost pet, crashing a host club, entering an eating contest or accidentally saving the planet. The trio rarely gets rich and almost never gets thanked, but their loyalty to one another anchors the chaos.
What makes the series a cult favorite is its wild swing between gut-busting parody and sudden, sincere emotion. One arc will spend an entire episode mocking other anime, breaking the fourth wall and dodging the censors over toilet jokes, and the next will deliver a sword-clashing showdown packed with real stakes and heartfelt drama. That whiplash of absurd comedy, samurai action and heart is exactly why fans adore Gintama.
