About Kaiju No. 8

Kaiju No. 8 is set in a version of Japan plagued by giant monsters known as kaiju, where a specialised Defense Force exists to neutralise these threats and protect the population. The story follows Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old man who works for a company that cleans up the bodies of kaiju after battles. Years earlier he had promised his childhood friend Mina Ashiro that they would join the Defense Force together, but while she rose to become a celebrated captain, Kafka repeatedly failed the entrance exams and drifted into the cleanup profession.

Kafka's life is upended when a small talking kaiju enters his body and transforms him into a humanoid monster, one the Defense Force later designates as Kaiju No. 8. Now able to switch between human and kaiju forms, Kafka gains immense strength while struggling to hide his condition. Encouraged by a younger colleague named Reno Ichikawa, he resolves to attempt the Defense Force exams one more time, determined to fight alongside Mina and prove himself despite his unusual and dangerous secret.

As Kafka enters the ranks of the Third Division, he must conceal his identity from the very organisation sworn to exterminate creatures like him, all while confronting increasingly powerful kaiju. The series blends large-scale monster battles with workplace comedy and themes of perseverance, friendship, and chasing a dream at an age when most people have given up. Adapted by Production I.G, the anime brought Naoya Matsumoto's hit Shonen Jump Plus manga to screens in 2024 to wide international acclaim.
