Character Arc
Mina Ashiro is the composed and highly capable captain of the Defense Force's Third Division and Kafka Hibino's childhood friend. As children the two promised to join the Defense Force together, but while Kafka fell behind, Mina excelled and rose to command one of the organisation's most important units, becoming a national symbol of strength and reliability.
Known for her calm leadership and exceptional combat skill, Mina carries the heavy responsibility of protecting the public from kaiju while inspiring confidence in her subordinates. Beneath her stern professional exterior she retains a personal connection to her past and the promise she once shared, which adds emotional weight to her interactions even when she is unaware of Kafka's secret.
As the series progresses, Mina's role places her at the centre of major battles and command decisions, and her relationship with Kafka, both as a distant ideal he chases and as a friend he wants to stand beside, forms one of the emotional cores of the story. Her presence drives much of Kafka's determination to finally earn his place in the Defense Force.
