Character Arc

Kafka Hibino is the protagonist of Kaiju No. 8, a good-natured 32-year-old who works for Monster Sweeper Inc., a company that disposes of kaiju corpses after the Defense Force has slain them. Once an ambitious teenager who vowed to join the Defense Force alongside his childhood friend Mina Ashiro, Kafka repeatedly failed the entrance exams and settled into the cleanup business, feeling that his dream had passed him by.

His life changes dramatically when a small kaiju forces its way into his body, granting him the power to transform into a humanoid monster that the Defense Force classifies as Kaiju No. 8. With newfound strength and the encouragement of his enthusiastic junior Reno Ichikawa, Kafka decides to take the exam one final time, now armed with abilities far beyond a normal human while desperately concealing what he has become.

Throughout the series Kafka must balance his loyalty to the Defense Force with the constant danger that his true nature could be discovered and that he could be treated as an enemy to be destroyed. His arc is defined by perseverance, humility, and the bonds he forms with his squad, as he fights to honour his old promise to Mina and to prove that even a latecomer can make a difference.
