About Lazarus
Lazarus is a 2025 original anime from studio MAPPA, created and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe of Cowboy Bebop fame. Set in a near future shaped by a celebrated breakthrough in medicine, the story begins with a revelation that upends a world that thought it had been cured of pain. A renowned neuroscientist named Dr. Skinner gave humanity Hapna, a miracle painkiller hailed as flawless and adopted across the globe. Years later, Skinner resurfaces with a warning. Hapna is a slow-acting poison, and everyone who has taken it has only a short window left before the effect becomes fatal.
With the clock running, a covert task force is assembled to track down the vanished scientist and recover the formula for an antidote before time expires. The team, code-named Lazarus, brings together a handful of gifted and unconventional operatives, each chosen for skills that do not fit a normal recruitment file. At the center is Axel Gilberto, an agile escape artist whose instincts for slipping out of impossible situations make him the engine of the chase. Around him the unit blends infiltration, planning, driving, and analysis into a single pursuit against the countdown.
True to Watanabe's signature style, Lazarus pairs a propulsive manhunt with a strong sense of rhythm, music, and global texture, moving between rooftops, streets, and skylines as the team closes in on its target. Action is staged with energy and momentum rather than dwelling on harm, keeping the focus on movement, timing, and the camaraderie of a crew under pressure. As the search for Skinner deepens, the series weighs questions about trust, second chances, and what a person might do with only weeks left, making the race for the cure as much about the people running it as the deadline itself.
