Character Arc
Haruka Sakura is the prickly, fiercely independent protagonist of Wind Breaker. Bullied and isolated for years because of his heterochromatic eyes, he arrives at Furin High School with a chip on his shoulder, determined to fight his way to the top and prove he needs no one. His bluntness and short fuse mask a deep loneliness and a longing to be acknowledged for who he is.
His worldview is shaken when he learns that Furin's fighters are not bullies but the guardians of Makochi, defending the townspeople under the Bofurin banner. Watching shopkeepers thank the very delinquents he expected to despise forces Sakura to reconsider what strength is actually for, and he begins channeling his considerable fighting talent toward protecting others rather than just winning.
Across the series Sakura gradually lowers his guard, forming real friendships with classmates like Nirei and earning the respect of leader Hajime Umemiya. His growth from a self-isolating brawler into someone who can rely on, and fight for, a community forms the emotional spine of the show, even as his temper and pride keep him entertainingly rough around the edges.
